How to raise high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C)

BY Berton Gladstone 2020-05-08

A friend found during physical examination that among the four indicators of blood lipids, triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), Only high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) is reduced, and the remaining three indicators are normal.

Cholesterol in the blood exists in many forms, of which the "low density lipoprotein cholesterol" (LDL-C) is the most harmful. The abnormally elevated LDL-C is the leading cause of atherosclerosis factor. The "High Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol" (HDL-C) is just the opposite, and is a beneficial factor (sometimes called "good" cholesterol) that helps prevent atherosclerosis. So — it has now been determined — that “high-density lipoprotein cholesterol” (HDL-C) reduction is also a “dyslipidemia” (regardless of whether LDL-C is normal), increasing the risk of atherosclerosis.

Studies have confirmed that the methods to enhance HDL-C are:

   1. Lose weight.

   2. Increase physical activity or regular exercise.

   3. A small amount of alcohol consumption (less than 20 grams of alcohol intake per day, less than 1 two-degree low-level liquor or half-two high-level liquor, be careful not to exceed this amount!).

   4. Use olive oil as cooking oil.

   5. Quit smoking.

   6. Taking fibrates or niacin sustained-release preparations.
