How to increase your basal metabolic rate

BY Carol Carey 2020-06-08

Basic metabolism refers to the energy consumed by people''s basic life activities (heartbeat, breathing, circulation, sobriety, body temperature). "Basic metabolic rate" refers to the energy consumed by basal metabolism per unit time (such as 1 hour).

Basic metabolism is the main way for the average person to consume energy, far exceeding exercise consumption. Taking my own (doctor, light manual labor) as an example, a total of 1900 kilocalories of energy is consumed every day, of which about 1500 kilocalories are basal metabolic consumption, and the remaining 400 kilocalories are used for work and other consumption (note that all these values can be used Instrument testing). Therefore, if you find a way to improve the basal metabolism (rate), it will significantly increase the total energy consumption, which is the "dream" of most weight loss people.

However, it is not easy to increase the basal metabolic rate.

Many of the "methods" that increase the basal metabolic rate are harmful to health and thus cannot be used, such as drug use? (I am just an example, not recommended to use drugs), eating thyroid hormones (treatment of hypothyroidism) Drugs), fever, tumors, burns... These conditions will be accompanied by an increase in basal metabolism, but none can be "made."

Safe and healthy way to increase basal metabolic rate, the first is exercise/exercise. Exercise, especially strength training, such as weight lifting, dumbbells, push-ups, plate support, fitness equipment, etc., can increase the muscles in the body. After the muscles increase, the basal metabolic rate increases, because the muscles consume more energy. Any exercise that increases muscle mass can increase the basal metabolic rate. This is a bit different from person to person. A rookie who never exercises, at the first exercise, the muscles will increase (because the original muscle foundation is too thin); and those sports experts need to work hard to take professional measures to make the muscles Increased (because the original muscle mass is enough), so in terms of increasing the basal metabolic rate, it is easier for rookies.

High-protein diets (more milk, eggs, meat, and fish) also help increase muscle mass, especially when combined with strength training, but its overall role is not as good as exercise and is in a secondary position.

Exhaustive exercise is to exhaust all the strength of feeding in a short period of time, such as a quick sprint run for 3 or 5 minutes, and the effort is close to collapse, after which the basal metabolic rate increases significantly. Professionally called the repayment of "oxygen debt". High-intensity manual labor has a similar effect.

Drinking coffee can also increase the basal metabolic rate a little bit, and may have little practical value, especially for the veterans who drink coffee.
