Those misunderstandings about jujube

BY Berton Gladstone 2020-05-04

Yesterday, a reporter interviewed me about issues related to jujube (fresh jujube). After the interview, she said that she chose the wrong topic and couldn''t write the article. Because all the stories about jujube she collected from various places could not withstand scrutiny.

  1. Jujube should not be eaten more, how much is appropriate to eat every day?

As we all know, jujube (fresh jujube) is not easy to digest. This is because jujube not only has a low moisture content of only 67% (80% to 90% of other common fruits), but also has a high dietary fiber content of 1.9%, which is significantly higher than other common fruits (such as grapes, the average is 0.4 %, Apple averages 1.2%). Dietary fiber (especially insoluble cellulose) cannot be digested in the stomach and small intestine, which can cause gastrointestinal discomfort when a large intake is taken. The dietary fiber in jujube is mainly concentrated in the skin. The pulp of jujube is crisp, but the jujube skin is very thin and hard. It is difficult to mash thoroughly when chewing. You can try it: after chewing the jujube (fresh date), do not swallow, spit it out and observe, you will find that there are mixed pieces of jujube skin of different sizes, they are separated from the flesh, the shape is different, the texture is hard, The edges are sharp. It is conceivable that after swallowing into the stomach, if your stomach mucosa happens to have inflammation or ulcers, it is tantamount to spreading salt on the wound, which will cause pain or discomfort.

Of course, if your stomach is healthy and there are no inflammations, ulcers or wounds, then your tolerance to jujube is stronger. Of course, even so, eating too much jujube (fresh) will cause stomach upset. This is the reason why jujubes should not be eaten. However, even if there is no obvious gastritis or ulcer, different people have different thickness of gastric mucosa and tolerance to certain irritants. Therefore, how many jujubes to eat (whether to eat 5 capsules or 35 capsules?) is completely different from person to person, and there is no exact limit. So, is it always possible to give a rough amount?

In fact, it is meaningless to give a rough limit. Because when jujubes are eaten, people can determine according to their own situation, and know how many jujubes are appropriate when you eat them. My wife usually doesn''t eat more than 5 jujubes (fresh) because she has a bad stomach, and it will be uncomfortable if she has more than 5 capsules. Later, she also found that jujubes with softer skins (fresh dates that are not so fresh or injured) were eaten as if they could eat a few more. I myself was in another situation. Every time I ate a happy meal, there was no obvious gastrointestinal discomfort in the four or fifty jujube (occasionally a little bloating feeling, I don’t care).

  2. Jujube has high sugar content, so it is not suitable for those with constipation

First of all, the logic of this sentence is wrong. If the sugar content is high, it will increase the constipation? How is this possible? There is no sugar in the stool, sugar will not affect the stool, the two have nothing to do with it. What''s more, foods with high sugar content are everywhere, not just jujube.

The actual situation is that jujube contains more dietary fiber, and dietary fiber has a laxative effect. Therefore, eating jujube (the same is true for other fruits and vegetables containing dietary fiber) is helpful to relieve constipation. Of course, practice is the only criterion for testing truth. Those with constipation can eat jujube and see if it worsens or relieves constipation. Don’t the media or “experts” feel bored?

  3. Jujube can’t be eaten with carrots

supports this statement The reason is that jujube (fresh) is rich in vitamin C (VC), and carrots contain oxidase that can destroy VC, so the encounter between the two reduces the nutritional value of jujube. The first two sentences are correct. Jujube has VC and carrot has oxidase, but the last sentence is wrong. The oxidase destruction ability of carrots is very limited. Even the VC contained in carrots cannot be destroyed. How can it destroy VC in other foods?

Therefore, if you really care about VC If destroyed, the "best" strategy can only be to avoid carrots. But this is also a problem, because in addition to carrots, cucumbers and other vegetables also contain oxidase that destroys VC, then even cucumbers, etc. are not eaten at all? But still not possible, although other foods do not destroy the oxidase of VC, there will be Other shortcomings, such as eggs have cholesterol, meat and milk have saturated fat ….. do not eat together? Starve to death.

As far as jujubes can’t be eaten with seafood, jujubes and green onions can’t be eaten together... Such nonsense based on food is even more worthwhile.

  4. Jujube can make up blood

First of all, it’s good to eat jujube for anemia patients, just like eating apples or grapes and other fruits same. However, if you expect the jujube to play a special blood-enhancing role, or even treat iron deficiency anemia, like pig liver or meat, it is wrong.

The iron content of jujube (fresh) jujube (fresh) is relatively high among fruits, 1.2 mg/100g. However, like other plant-based foods, the absorption rate of iron in jujube is extremely low and cannot be used by the human body.

The content of vitamin C (VC) in jujube (fresh) jujube (fresh) is the best among fruits, at 243 mg/100 g. VC can promote iron absorption and help prevent iron deficiency anemia. However, as already discussed above, jujube (fresh) can often not be eaten more, eating ten or eight jujube dates is purely tickling.
