Myth: eating meat is bad for your health

BY Berton Gladstone 2020-05-07

"Eating meat is not good for your health", "People with high blood pressure, high blood fat, or diabetes should eat less meat" is very popular. The most ridiculous advice I have ever heard is "eat less meat and add more oil to cooking." Many people attribute the high incidence of various chronic diseases to eating "big fish and meat". This statement is too general and not accurate. How much meat is eaten as "big"? How many people in China can eat "big"?

In fact, meat includes livestock meat (including pigs, cattle, sheep, etc.), poultry meat (including chicken, duck, goose, turkey) and fish meat (including various fish and seafood) is a type of nutritional value High food is an important source of high-quality protein, trace elements and multi-vitamins. It is also an important part of a balanced diet and should be eaten in moderation. The "Dietary Guidelines for Chinese Residents 2007" recommends that adults consume an average of 50 to 75 grams of livestock and poultry meat and 50 to 100 grams of fish or seafood. The total of the two amounts to 100~175 grams (about 2~4). I think that quite a lot of people in China do not meet this standard of meat consumption, so why not talk too much?

Some people are willing to use the "average consumption" of meat to say things. However, due to the polarization of the Chinese people’s living standards, the difference is quite large, and meat consumption is not “average”. Only a small portion of human meat consumption far exceeds the average, and most human meat consumption is lower than or close to the average. This situation is like talking about the "average income" of the Chinese. Because there is a big difference between the rich and the poor, most of the wealth is concentrated in the hands of a small number of people, so the "average income" does not represent most people. Similarly, the average consumption of meat is difficult to represent the majority. Generally speaking, Chinese people consume too much meat, just like generally speaking that Chinese people have higher incomes, which is not convincing.

In short, blindly think that the Chinese consume too much meat, and it is wrong to say that eating meat is harmful. The correct approach is Carefully assess your daily meat intake and compare it with the recommended intake (100-175g per day) of the "Dietary Guidelines for Chinese Residents 2007". The decrease is a decrease and the increase is an increase.

It must be pointed out that when it comes to eating meat, the main problem at present is not that the amount of meat is too much, but that the way of eating meat is too poor. Barbecued meat and fried meat not only destroy the nutrition of the meat, but also produce clear carcinogens; the concentrated consumption of meat (a big meal) is more common, which is not conducive to its nutritional use and causes waste; people Preferred meats, such as ribs, mutton, steak, etc. are all varieties with high fat content; a large number of meat products, such as ham sausages, in the name of meat, low nutrition and low quality.
