Eating chives

BY Berton Gladstone 2020-05-07

According to the China Broadcasting Network report on April 9, from April 1, some hospitals in Qingdao received 9 patients who were poisoned after eating leek. They all suffered from headaches, nausea, and diarrhea after eating leek. After being examined by the hospital, it is an organophosphorus poisoning, which means that the residual pesticide on the leek is seriously exceeded and causes poisoning. As of April 9, a total of nearly 2,000 batches of leeks were sampled, and 1930 kg of vegetables with pesticide residues exceeding the standard were detected, most of which were unqualified.

Reports of food poisoning caused by eating leeks with more pesticide residues are often seen in newspapers. In fact, leek is one of the most common foods that cause pesticide food poisoning. It is precisely because of fear of excessive pesticide residues that I have rarely eaten leek for several years. Compared with other vegetables, why do leeks contain more pesticides?

This is firstly related to the special pests of leek—the leek maggots. The leek maggots exclusively eat the leek root. It eats up from the root of the leek and stops until it is eaten on the ground (the leek will be yellow or dead). Because the leek maggots are hidden in the soil, a large amount of highly toxic pesticides, such as "1605" (an organophosphorus pesticide) must be sprayed to kill them. In order to kill the leek maggots and avoid reducing production, it is more common to irrigate the land with high-toxic organophosphorus pesticides. As a result, a large amount of organophosphorus pesticides are absorbed by the roots of leeks, and the organophosphorus pesticides that enter the leeks through the roots cannot be washed away. It is easy to cause organophosphorus pesticide food poisoning after eating.

Even worse, after irrigating the land with organophosphorus pesticides such as "1605", the leek grows extremely strong, and the leek becomes thick and green. Not only does the yield increase significantly, but also the appearance is more beautiful and the sale is good. At this time, the function of organophosphorus pesticides such as "1605" is like "fertilizer". It can be described as "two benefits at a time." Therefore, it is not ruled out that there are undesirable vegetable farmers who deliberately increase the amount of organic phosphorus pesticides irrigated for this purpose.

has to say that the current farmers’ markets in various localities are far behind in the detection of pesticide residues in vegetables. Testing expenses, testing scope, testing equipment, testing technology, and transparency are all unsatisfactory. It is almost impossible to rely on the existing detection mechanism to prevent vegetables with excessive pesticide residues. As ordinary consumers, in desperation, we can only use "excessive" measures like "don''t eat leeks" to protect ourselves.

It must be noted that although there are many poisonous leeks (a large number of reports prove it), there are certainly some leeks that are non-toxic, and of course non-toxic leeks can be eaten. The problem is that I can''t believe which market or supermarket''s leeks are non-toxic, because most places are not tested, or only chat is better than none, so I can only choose not to eat leeks.

I don’t call on everyone to refuse to eat leeks (even if I call, I don’t necessarily have a few people to listen to me), nor do I want to break the money path of the leeks’ operators (for several years, leeks are still the most mainstream vegetables) A), I don’t even call on the relevant departments to strengthen the detection of leeks (because this kind of appeal is useless), I just express my thoughts that I don’t dare to eat leeks, please don’t get seated right!
