How to check for osteoporosis

BY Iris Wheatley 2020-08-03

In my expert clinic, often patients come and ask how to treat osteoporosis. I often say to patients: "How do you know there is osteoporosis?" Some patients say they have checked bone density However, there are many patients who have never had any tests, but just feel that they have osteoporosis. Scientifically speaking, there are many detection methods for osteoporosis, hospitals are doing it, the community is also doing it, and even I have seen some malls have counters with the "free detection of bone density" sign.

  osteoporosis diagnosis methods:

1, X-ray photography method: Use X-ray filming method to observe the density and shape of bones in different parts, especially the number and shape of trabecular bones. The most frequently photographed parts are the human hips, wrists, and spine. The difference in optical density is used to evaluate the condition of the bones. The disadvantage is that when the X-ray method shows clear osteoporosis, the bone loss has been at least 30%. xFF05; now.

  2. X-ray absorption method: including single-energy X-ray absorption method, dual-energy X-ray absorption method, quantitative CT and peripheral bone quantitative CT. At present, the dual-energy X-ray absorption method is most commonly used in hospitals, while the single-energy X-ray absorption method is mostly used in shopping malls or community inspection equipment, and its value is not accurate.

  3. Photon absorption method: At present, it has been replaced by X-ray absorption method.

  4. Bone pathology detection method:Bone tissue samples are made into pathological slices, observed and calculated on a special image analyzer to calculate the trabecular bone morphology and quantity. Loose to make an intuitive diagnosis, but because this detection method is invasive, it is only used for animal experiments and clinical differential diagnosis.

  5. Ultrasound detection method:Ultrasound diagnosis is a new type of non-invasive osteoporosis diagnosis technology. Its advantage is that it can show changes in bone mass early. It is worth mentioning that, compared with the X-ray absorption method, the ultrasound method is not necessarily very accurate in value, but because it has no radiation, it has advantages in identifying osteoporosis in children.

  6. Biochemical indicators: Clinically often by measuring the bone mineral content in blood or urine to indirectly understand the status of bone metabolism, which is helpful for the primary bone quality Diagnosis and classification of osteoporosis, and differential diagnosis of primary and secondary osteoporosis osteoporosis. It is often inappropriate for patients to evaluate whether calcium deficiency is based on blood calcium, because there are a small number of patients with osteoporosis who have high blood calcium levels.
