Beware of sub-filled olive oil

BY Berton Gladstone 2020-05-07

Olive oil is extracted from fresh or ripe olive oil by cold pressing process. Olive oil has oleic acid as its main component and its content is as high as 60%. Oleic acid is a monounsaturated fatty acid with a low degree of unsaturation, so its properties are stable and not easily oxidized. It can be fried, fried, fried, or used in cold salad, suitable for cooking all kinds of food.

People''s attention to olive oil began with the so-called "Mediterranean diet". Although people in the Mediterranean region (including Greece, Spain and Italy) consume more fat, the incidence of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases is relatively low, and people generally live longer. The World Health Organization (WHO) has found through research that this is related to the eating habits of the region, and the residents of the region regard olive oil as the main edible oil. The monounsaturated fatty acids in olive oil are much higher than the usual soybean oil, peanut oil and salad oil, and are an important source of monounsaturated fatty acids. Therefore, it is believed that the monounsaturated fatty acids in olive oil are good for heart health. Later research proved that olive oil can reduce "bad" cholesterol in the blood (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, LDL-C), increase "good" cholesterol in the blood (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, HDL-C), and prevent arteriosclerosis The role is unique.

olive oil is becoming more and more popular, and the prices of various olive oils on the market vary greatly. Many olive oils are actually "olive olive pomace oil", that is, the oil obtained from olive pomace has lower quality than pure olive oil. There are reports that China imports a large amount of olive-pomace pomace, but few honestly label "pomace oil". That is to say, a lot of olive oil is sub-filled, in fact, olive olive pomace oil. Data show that in 2006, China''s "olive pomace oil imports grew the fastest and accounted for a significant increase in the proportion of total olive oil imports. The imported olive pomace oil accounted for 42.1% of China''s total olive oil imports in the first two months, compared with the same period last year. Increased by 4.8 times. The virgin olive oil accounted for 40.8% of the total imports, down 20% from the same period last year." Because of this, it is urgent to introduce the national standard "Olive Olive Pomace Oil" to regulate olive oil products.

In addition, there are some olive blending oils on the market, that is, olive oil mixed with other vegetable oils, such as peanut oil, palm oil, etc. in a certain proportion. Also, because the national standards for blending oils have not yet been introduced, many blending oils are inferior. Some “olive blended oils” have a small proportion of olive oil, which is not the main raw material and is not worthy of the name.

When buying olive oil, consumers must widen their eyes and read the product label carefully to avoid spending good money on "bad" products.
