How to choose meat

BY Carol Carey 2020-05-21

I have seen too many saying that eating meat is not good and against eating meat, but in fact meat is a very important part of human recipes, its importance is no less than that of vegetables and fruits, and it has its irreplaceable nutrition effect. Perhaps what we should really object to is eating too much meat (such as more than 300 grams per day) or improper cooking methods (such as grilling, frying, etc.). For more information, please see--

Meat includes livestock meat (including pigs, cattle, sheep, etc.), poultry meat (including chicken, duck, goose, turkey) and fish meat (including various (Fish and seafood) is a type of food with high nutritional value. It is an important source of high-quality protein, trace elements and multi-vitamins. It is also an important part of a balanced diet. It should be eaten in moderation.

The fat composition of fish (and most seafood) is very special, containing more polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially DHA and EPA are almost "patents" of fish (and most seafood), It has a certain effect on preventing dyslipidemia and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases in adults, and it is also important for the development of the nervous system of infants and young children. Therefore, as the first choice for meat, it is recommended to consume an average of 50 to 100 grams per day (that is, 7 to 1.4 kilograms per week, which usually means to eat 2 to 4 times a week).

Poultry contains less fat, and its proportion of unsaturated fatty acids is higher, and its fatty acid composition is better than that of animal fats. However, due to the relatively low level of development of the breeding industry, the problem of hormone and antibiotic residues in poultry is usually more serious than that of livestock. Animals are called "red meat" because of their bright red muscle color. The trace elements contained in iron are difficult to replace by other foods, but they contain more saturated fatty acids, which are harmful to health. Therefore, it is better to choose lean meat for animals to minimize fat and avoid meat oil. It is recommended that the average daily intake of livestock and poultry meat (total) 50 to 75 grams (note that this value is lower than fish).

In short, the average adult should consume 100~175 grams (about 2~4) of meat per day, including more than half of fish and less than half of livestock and poultry. In fact, a considerable portion of urban (and most rural) residents eat meat that has not yet reached the above standard and should be increased in moderation.
