What diseases can cause limb numbness

BY Iris Wheatley 2020-06-21

  Nerve damage:

   1. Ulnar nerve damage: When the ulnar nerves of the forearm and upper arm are injured, compressed or suffering from tumors, they can cause ipsilateral pinky and ring finger anesthesia Pain and some finger movement disorders. The ulnar nerve groove at the back of the elbow is more vulnerable to injury or compression. Most of them will gradually recover about six months after the injury, but if they have tumors, complete rupture, or severe compression, surgery is often required.

   2. Medial nerve damage: the median nerves of the forearm and upper arm cause numbness in the palm, thumb, index finger, and middle finger due to trauma, tumor, or compression. The most susceptible to injury or compression in the wrist is called carpal tunnel syndrome. The treatment principle is the same as before.

  3. Radial nerve damage: Flexural nerves are more vulnerable to injury in the middle and lower part of the outer side of the upper arm, and there is numbness on the back of the thumb and index finger and sagging of fingers and wrists. The treatment principle is the same as before.

   4. Brachial plexus nerve damage: lesions or injuries in the axilla or anterior neck, which can cause mixed symptoms of total or partial damage to the ulnar, median, and flexural nerves. The treatment principle is the same as before.

Myelopathy: When the spinal cord has inflammation, tumor, or trauma, it can be manifested as numbness in one limb and weakness in the other limb, or symptoms such as numbness in the lower half of the body.

Parathyroid disease: Some people often have intermittent numbness or convulsions in their fingers or toes, which can spread to the whole body in severe cases, and they do not heal for many years; sometimes they can be better for a while, or the old disease can recur . This symptom is most likely a sign of parathyroid disease.

Parathyroid gland damage or ischemia can cause hypoparathyroidism, which is more common in accidental thyroid injury or due to an autoimmune disease. When a large amount of blood calcium enters the bone, it causes hypocalcemia convulsions Sometimes, it can be temporary or not healing for months or years. Due to increased neuromuscular stress, the most obvious manifestation is tetany. In the early stage of the disease, there were only abnormal sensations, tingling limbs, numbness, spasms of hands and feet, and stiffness.

When blood calcium decreases to a certain level, twitching symptoms often occur, and the two fingers flex and adduct to form an "eagle claw". Afterwards, the feet also show tonic extension. In severe cases, the whole body skeletal muscle and smooth muscle It can also be in a state of spasm, accompanied by laryngospasm, bronchospasm, and crises such as asthma, sore throat, choking, and apnea.

When the myocardium is affected, it may show tachycardia, septal muscle spasm, and sometimes hiccups. The above symptoms can be induced by factors such as infection, overwork and emotion. Women are also prone to attacks before and after menstruation. When the blood calcium is 7-8 mg, there are no obvious clinical symptoms, which is called recessive twitch syndrome.

Brain nerve compression: If the posture is not correct, the neck is skewed or the arm is compressed during sleep, the hand nerve will be numb due to the compression of the arm nerve. At this time, just change the posture to sleep, move the arm and numb The sense can be eliminated.

Spine diseases: Some vertebral bone hyperplasia will compress the nerves in the spinal canal, and there will be numbness and pain in the limbs.

See a doctor in time, this is to be done when a disease is found, and don’t “carry” the disease.
