How to protect the lumbar spine

BY Iris Wheatley 2020-08-03

Our lumbar spine is very important to us, the first is to play a supporting role for our entire body, so that we can move freely. So how should we protect the lumbar spine in daily life? Then let us know with the experts of Conan!

  1. Don’t bend for a long time

In our daily life, we want to protect our lumbar spine, We must develop good habits, we must not bend over for a long time.

For some jobs that require long-term bending over, such as woodworking planers, farmers hoeing, etc., in these jobs, the pressure on the lumbar intervertebral disc is more than doubled when standing.

If you bend over to draw water from the well, the waist pressure can be increased by 5 times! Therefore, the incidence of low back pain during long-term bending is high, and the incidence of disc herniation is also high. Long-term bending over has a lot of pressure on the lumbar intervertebral disc, which is not conducive to the rehabilitation of the lumbar intervertebral disc.

  2. Don’t sit for a long time

Daily life may often cause us to sit for a long time due to work or study , Sedentary is very harmful to the lumbar spine.

Long-term working in seats such as long-term desk workers, drivers, factory assembly line workers, etc., the incidence of low back pain is high.

Long-term sedentary, the lumbar spine is in a state of flexion, the lumbar muscle ligaments are in tension, and the pressure on the lumbar intervertebral disc is increased by 10 times! Chronic tension of the lumbar muscles and lumbar ligaments will appear chronic Strain, the stability and protection of the waist is reduced.

At the same time, the overload of the lumbar intervertebral disc after prolonged sitting causes the degeneration of the lumbar intervertebral disc, it is easy to rupture the fibrous ring of the intervertebral disc under the action of external force, and the nucleus pulposus protrudes to compress the nerve. Therefore, it is meaningful to insist on working out or changing positions during working hours. We can stand up and walk around every 20 to 30 minutes of sitting and develop good habits.

  3. Don’t use explosive force

Our daily activities must be gentle, and don’t suddenly exert force, which will cause serious damage to our lumbar spine s damage.

The lumbar intervertebral disc tissue is located between the two lumbar vertebrae and is subjected to the pressure and movement of the lumbar vertebrae. If suddenly overloaded with explosive force, it is easy to damage the intervertebral disc.

Therefore, before we apply force, we should first move the waist and apply force slowly. For example, when lifting heavy objects, first prepare for the posture, and don''t use force suddenly. Especially when there is a lumbar disc herniation, the explosive force easily tears the originally stable lumbar disc fibrous ring wound, which aggravates the condition.

  4. Do not exercise vigorously to avoid trauma

trauma is also one of the main reasons for lumbar disc herniation. Those with lumbar disc herniation are prohibited from any ball sports and unilateral sports. Vigorous exercise can also tear the fibrous ring wound of those with lumbar disc herniation and aggravate the protrusion.

Especially in the acute stage of lumbar disc herniation, nerves appear edema and aseptic inflammation due to nucleus pulposus compression stimulation, and intense exercise will aggravate the frictional stimulation of the protrusions on the nerves, which is not conducive to nerve edema and inflammation Subside. Therefore, patients with lumbar disc herniation are prohibited from vigorous exercise.

  5. Don’t sleep on a soft bed

Our normal spine has an “S”-shaped physiological curvature, when sleeping, the posture is not good, the pillow is over The high height and the soft mattress are not conducive to the physiological curvature of the spine, making the lumbar muscles tense and stiff, and poor blood circulation, which is not conducive to the rehabilitation of lumbar disc herniation.

Therefore, the pillow height and the softness and hardness of the mattress when we want to sleep should be moderate. The hardness of the mattress is suitable for people to sleep on it without deformation and comfort.
