The American Academy of Pediatrics 2008 Guidelines for the Prevention and Treatment of Rickets and Vitamin D Deficiency recommends that all infants and young children (whether or not breastfed) be supplemented with at least 400 IU of vitamin D daily shortly after birth. The Chinese Nutrition Society's "Dietary Guidelines for Chinese Residents 2007" recommends that breast-feeding babies should be supplemented with vitamin D 400-800 IU (North) or 400-600 IU (South) from 2 weeks after birth.
