Diarrhea can cause or worsen malnutrition, and malnutrition can also increase diarrhea. During diarrhea, reduced food intake, reduced nutrient absorption, and increased nutritional requirements often together lead to weight loss and growth stagnation: children's nutritional status declines and original malnutrition worsens. On the other hand, malnutrition worsens diarrhea and prolongs the course of disease, so that the number of diarrhea in malnourished children may be more frequent.
