Iron intake during the second and third trimesters needs to be increased by 4 and 9 milligrams to 24 and 29 milligrams, respectively, compared to the first trimester. For example, adding 50-100 grams of red meat per day during the second and third trimesters can provide 2.5-5 milligrams of iron (50 grams of meat has the size of a normal 10 cm sausage or palm). Dietary supplements can also supplement food iron deficiency.
