BY Iris Wheatley 2020-04-11

Selenium is a very special anti-oxidant substance in minerals, which belongs to essential trace elements of human body. Selenium not only has antioxidant properties, but also an important synthetic element of many antioxidant enzymes in the body, such as the synthesis of glutathione peroxidase without selenium.

The Chinese Society of Nutrition lists selenium as one of the 15 essential nutrients for the human body. A large number of clinical trials at home and abroad have proved that long-term selenium deficiency in the human body may cause dysfunction of some important organs, leading to many serious diseases. my country presents a selenium-deficient zone from Heilongjiang Province in the Northeast to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in the Southwest. Many provinces and cities along the way are mostly in selenium-deficient or low-selenium zones, and the population of these areas has a high incidence of tumors, liver diseases, cardiovascular diseases, etc.

Studies have shown that people with low or low selenium supplement the selenium Not only can prevent the occurrence of tumors, liver diseases and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, but also improve the body''s immune capacity, maintain the normal function of the heart, liver, lungs, stomach and other important organs, and prevent the occurrence of chronic and serious diseases.

The earliest discovery of selenium deficiency in China was in 1935 before liberation, some inexplicable serious illnesses existed in the Keshan area in northeast China, people suddenly died unconsciously, abnormally enlarged joints, hypertrophy and deformation of the heart, etc. The disease is very common and is called "Keshan disease". It was only after liberation that it was found that it was most likely caused by selenium deficiency. Later, the use of selenium supplementing drugs in these areas was able to control Keshan disease.

In fact, selenium deficiency can also cause many diseases, such as: important factors that cause high incidence of cardiomyopathy, coronary heart disease, hypertension, high blood fat, diabetes and even cancer. There are actually many selenium-deficient areas in my country. For example, Qidong and Rugao in Jiangsu have high incidence of cancer because of selenium depletion, which is one of the regions with the highest incidence of cancer in China.
