The necessary diet for fracture rehabilitation

BY Iris Wheatley 2020-08-02

A patient with a fracture came to the ward a few days ago. When talking about the rehabilitation diet, the family naturally thought of bone soup. In people''s mind, bone soup seems to have been the conventional treatment diet in the process of fracture rehabilitation. This should be derived from the traditional Chinese medicine saying "what to eat and what to eat".

Bone formation requires a complex process In terms of its structure, calcium, phosphorus, iron, magnesium, zinc... are all essential elements for bone formation, but protein and vitamins are also indispensable raw materials. Drinking bone soup alone may not be the best way.

Fragrant bone soup is reminiscent of the rich nutrients in it, and it will always make everyone feel that although they only drink bone soup, the wounds that they broke are in the "carrying soup" "Melted bones look like", in fact, a big part is the psychological effect. In fact, drinking bone soup is not easy to add too much calcium, because calcium is not easily dissolved in water, so there is not as much calcium in bone soup as everyone thinks. Even if you put a lot of vinegar in the bone soup, the dissolved calcium acetate is not satisfactory.

But if the cooking is proper, the bone soup with most of the fat removed is used as the cooking ingredient. For example, stew fish, tofu and green vegetables rich in calcium, potassium and vitamin K in bone soup, which can not only supplement calcium, but also increase the balance of the diet, which is conducive to the recovery of bone injury.

The rehabilitation of patients with fractures requires more than dietary conditioning. Under the premise of medical treatment, quitting smoking and restricting alcohol, combining a rehabilitation diet and proper exercise are the only ways. Appropriate amount of physical exercise can stimulate bones, increase the activity of osteoblasts and increase bone mass, thereby promoting the healing of bone injuries. In addition, moderate sun exposure is required every day to make ultraviolet rays promote the synthesis of vitamin D3 by 7-dehydrocholesterol under the skin and promote calcium absorption.
